Lovely house, bread and cake a lovely surprise
Perfect location for short stay in the boarders. Welcome cake and warmed rooms. Children excited to be staying in "a castle", so old with a little potted history - felt very special and privaleged. Lovely rooms - so spacious. Bedding and sofa cushions are feather which was slight issue with a group member. Heating problem (on all night) was quickly resolved by owner next day. All communications either text or email quickly responded to both before and during the stay. Car parking immediately outside was free and most days available. Church opposite is not an issue in terms of busyness or bells. Very short walk to most shops. Coop at other end of town for most things and large Sainsbury's under 1mile away too. Lots of cafes (some shut at 4pm in winter) and evening dining places - The Wagon is good. But The Turret House is an easy place to cook your own having lots of space and necessary equipment. Just short of another small pan and colander for pasta draining. Lounge is HUGE. But a large and small sofa were not quite big enough for 6 of us to relax and watch and film. Two additional chairs are fine for book reading, but not easy to relax in. TV and DVD player worked fine as did the wifi - which amazingly reached every room through very thick walls! This has been one of the best places we have stayed and I would have no hesitation in recommending it. Staff in tourist info helpful too, and some very nice shops in Kelso. Floors Castle is ok, but pricey. We also did the town trail, which is no longer printed but we downloaded it to an ipod and used that to find our way around and history of the town.
The house was immaculate and full of character and exactly what we expected. The freshly baked bread and fruit loaf on arrival was a lovely touch.
